Desert Hiking Essentials
🌡️ Beat the Heat
Hike before 9 AM or after 5 PM during summer months (May–September). Trails close when temps exceed 110°F at many preserves.
💧 Water & Sun Protection
Carry 1 liter per hour of hiking. Wear SPF 30+, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat. Most trails offer minimal shade.
🥾 Trail Etiquette
Stay on marked trails. Yield to uphill hikers. Keep dogs leashed. Pack out all trash. Respect wildlife and desert plants.
McDowell Sonoran Preserve Trailheads

Phoenix's most famous hike featuring steep rocky terrain, metal handrails for support, and challenging scrambling sections. Summit reaches 2,704 feet with breathtaking 360° views of the entire Valley. Average hiking time: 2-3 hours. Rescues are frequent—know your limits. Not for beginners, young children, or those afraid of heights.
⚠️ Important Safety Notice
Camelback Mountain averages 200+ rescue calls per year. This is an extremely steep, challenging trail with exposure. Bring 2 liters of water per person, wear proper hiking shoes (no sandals), start early to avoid heat, and turn back if you feel unsafe. Rescues are costly and dangerous for first responders.
Camelback Mountain - Cholla Trail

Alternative route to Camelback summit, slightly longer but less crowded than Echo Canyon. Rocky, steep terrain with loose rocks and sections requiring scrambling. Same spectacular summit views. Better parking situation than Echo Canyon.
Still a very challenging hike requiring fitness and preparation. Marginally easier than Echo Canyon but still demands respect. Bring plenty of water and start early.
Pinnacle Peak Park

One of Scottsdale's most popular and accessible trails. Excellent for families, beginners, and those wanting desert hiking without extreme difficulty. Best facilities of any North Scottsdale trailhead.

Slightly more forgiving than Camelback but still very challenging. Excellent workout and summit experience. Very popular with fitness enthusiasts and trail runners.
