1. Aurora Colony Days, August 7 to 9

The 37th year of a festival that takes over one of the most photogenic historic downtowns in the state. It opens Friday night with a biergarten in the Old Aurora Colony Museum courtyard, then Saturday brings a pancake breakfast at the Legion Hall, a 5K and kids fun run, a street market, a parade, a classic car show, and a family concert to close it out.

If you have never wandered Aurora's antique shops, this is the weekend to do it. Everything is open and the whole town is on the street.

2. Willamette Valley Chamber Music Festival, August 8 to 9

Now in its 11th season, this one pairs professional chamber musicians with the wineries hosting them. Concerts move between J. Christopher at Appassionata Estate, Archery Summit, and Sokol Blosser, each weekend with a different program. Admission includes three pours chosen to match the music.

The August 8 and 9 dates are the Newberg weekend at J. Christopher. If classical music in a barrel room sounds like your evening, book early. These sell out.

Mid August: the heritage weekends

3. Junction City Scandinavian Festival, August 13 to 16

This is the big one, and it is free. A town of roughly 6,000 people hosts more than 90,000 visitors across four days. Downtown turns into a Nordic village with three stages of music, folk dancers, Viking-era craft demonstrations, and food lines that move slower than you want them to and are worth it anyway.

2026 marks the 65th year. Each day honors a different country, running Finland, Norway, Sweden, then Denmark, so the costumes, music, and food specials shift as the weekend goes.

Where: Downtown Junction City, 195 W 5th Avenue Cost: Free, pay only for food and crafts Tip: Thursday has the lightest crowds and the easiest parking.

4. Capital City Retro Fest, August 14 to 16

Three nights of tribute bands at the Gerry Frank Amphitheater in Salem's Riverfront Park, with a food cart pod and a bar for the 21 and over crowd. The 2026 lineup covers Def Leppard, Fleetwood Mac, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Foo Fighters, Duran Duran, Tom Petty, U2, Alanis Morissette, the Doobie Brothers, and Hall & Oates.

It won Music Festival of the Year from the Oregon Festivals and Events Association in 2025, which is a strong showing for an event that had just launched.

Where: Gerry Frank Amphitheater, 200 Water St NE, Salem Cost: $75 for three days, $30 single day, free for ages 12 and under with a paid adult

5. Grand Ronde Competition Powwow, August 14 to 16

One of the largest Native cultural gatherings in the Pacific Northwest, hosted by the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde at the Uyxat Powwow Grounds. Three days of dance and drum competitions, singing contests, and vendors selling handcrafted work.

Friday opens with the royalty pageant at 11 a.m. and the first grand entry at 7 p.m. Visitors are welcome. If you have never been to a powwow, arrive for a grand entry and stay through it.

6. Aumsville Corn Festival, August 15

The 58th annual, and a designated Oregon Heritage Tradition. There is a parade in the morning, more than 80 vendors, live music from the Rock N Roll Cowboys, family games with cash prizes, a corn eating contest, and a keg toss.

Also, free hot buttered corn. That is the entire pitch and it works every year.

Late August: fairs, art, and balloons

7. Clackamas County Fair and Canby Rodeo, August 18 to 22

Held every year since 1907. Five days of livestock shows, open class exhibits, carnival rides, midway entertainment, local vendors, and five straight nights of PRCA rodeo. It is the classic county fair experience, and the rodeo is the reason people drive in from three counties over.

8. Oregon Aloha Festival, August 21 to 22

A free two-day celebration of Pacific Island culture at Alton Baker Park, now in its fifth year. Live music and dance, cultural demonstrations, workshops, artisan vendors, and island food. Genuinely one of the friendliest events on this list for families with young kids.

9. Woodburn Fiesta Mexicana, August 21 to 23

The 62nd annual, and one of the largest cultural festivals in the valley. Last year it drew more than 25,000 people. The weekend brings 60-plus vendors, a soccer tournament, lucha libre, carnival rides, live music, and the Saturday parade, which steps off at 11 a.m. on August 22 and is the highlight for most attendees.

The festival started in 1963 as a thank you to the area's farmworkers, and that history is still very much part of the weekend.

10. Silverton Arts Festival, August 22 to 23

A juried art show set along Silver Creek in Coolidge-McClaine Park, with booths lining the paths under oak and Douglas fir. Live entertainment, hands-on activities, and a genuinely high bar for the work on display.

Worth flagging: the festival is returning in 2026 after a break, so there is some pent-up interest. Silver Falls State Park and the Oregon Garden are both minutes away if you want to make a full day of it.

It has run almost every year since 1862. Only the first week lands in August, so if you want to go before Labor Day, plan for that opening weekend.

12. Northwest Art and Air Festival, August 28 to 30

The best-looking event on the calendar. Hot air balloons lift off at sunrise from Timber Linn Park on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, weather permitting. Friday night the balloonists fire their burners for the Night Glow, which lights the whole park.

Between launches there are 70-plus artist booths, food vendors, a family zone, a car show, a beer and wine garden, and a Saturday night concert in the amphitheater. Admission is free and parking is $10.
